What do I need to do to hire Jamie?
You need to telephone the office and speak to her secretary so a conflict check
can be performed and an appointment can be scheduled.
Does Jamie do free consultations?
No, and most attorneys who do free consultations get paid on a contingency fee basis
(from what they recover). Jamie charges her normal hourly rate of $200.00 per hour
for the consultation and for all other work. If you are there for half of an hour,
it will be $100, but most prospective clients are there for the full hour.
What does the consultation fee cover?
It only covers the initial meeting with Jamie. If you have further questions or
need further assistance, you will need to bring in the retainer amount you are quoted
at the end of the consultation.
What do I need to bring to the consultation?
If you are involved in ongoing litigation, you must first terminate the services
of your existing attorney and you should request that they provide you with a copy
of your file. You should bring that to the meeting, or at least a copy of the judgments
and any papers which you may have recently been served with. The more information
you provide, the better the advice that can be provided to you at the consultation.
If your case is just starting, and child support or spousal support (alimony) is
an issue, you should also bring:
- Copy of two (2) most recent income tax returns, together with supporting documentation;
- Last four (4) check stubs, or a statement from employer as to how you are paid (salary,
hourly, commission, etc.) as well as your year-to-date income and the period of
time that income covers if it has not been the entire year;
- If applicable, proof of private school tuition, fees, books, etc, from the school,
statement of the daycare costs from the daycare provider, and health insurance cost
for the minor child(ren);
How much does Jamie charge for a retainer?
The retainer fee varies from client to client and case to case. It depends largely
on the estimate of work that your matter will need. The more complicated or contested
your case appears, the higher the retainer fee quote will be.
Is the retainer fee I am quoted going to cover all work done?
Possibly, but it is only an estimate and based upon the information obtained during
the consultation. Some clients end up paying far in excess of the initial estimate,
and some clients amicable resolve the issues or reconcile and receive a refund.
You will receive a monthly statement indicating the amount of money you had when
the month started and that is held in a trust account for you, the amount of work
that was done and the corresponding costs, as well as any fees which were paid (Clerk
of Court), and how much money you have left.
Does Jamie take cases all over Louisiana?
No, Jamie will only practice in East Baton Rouge Parish and the 18th Judicial District,
which includes the parishes of West Baton Rouge, Iberville, and Pointe Coupee. If
your case is not in one of those four parishes, you will need to find another attorney.
Can I send Jamie an email or just talk to her on the telephone
without coming in?
Sorry, it is imperative that lawyers maintain records on every client with whom
they have a professional relationship to avoid conflicts of interest (discussing
the case or representing an opposing party). When you contact the office for an
appointment, a conflict check will be made. Once you come in for a consultation,
you will be placed in our records in an effort to prevent the firm from becoming
involved on behalf of your opponent.
