Jamie's Profile
Jamie Elizabeth Fontenot is a native of Mamou, Louisiana. She graduated in 1988 with a B.A. in psychology from Northwestern State University. In 1991, she received her paralegal degree from Louisiana State University.
Ms. Fontenot eventually began working at one of the premier family law firms in Baton Rouge, and continued to work at that firm as a law clerk while attending law school.
In 1995, Ms. Fontenot graduated ranked number 1 in her class of 107 graduating students at Southern University Law center, and she was also a Law Review Candidate, member of the Moot Court Board, and Vice Justice of the Phi Alpha Delta legal fraternity. She was admitted to the Louisiana State Bar Association in October of 1995, and effective January 1, 2002, will be one of the less than one hundred Board Certified Family Law Specialists in the State of Louisiana.
From November 1995 through June of 2001, Ms. Fontenot practiced with Audrey A. McCain (APLC) in Plaquemine, Louisiana. She has been a Juvenile Public Defender in Plaquemine City Court from 1998 through 2004, a District Court Public Defender from October 2000 through December of 2001, and has been the Town Attorney for Brusly, Louisiana since January 2001. In July of 2001, she relocated and established her current office in West Baton Rouge Parish.
Ms. Fontenot's private practice encompasses all aspects of family law, including but not limited to divorce, child custody, child support, spousal support, and community property. She also handles criminal defense cases, wills and successions, as well as various notarial acts.
Ms. Fontenot has been a lecturer at the following Louisiana State Bar Association continuing legal education seminars:
- Fundamentals of Family Law at Southern University Law Center in 1996.
- Legislative Revisions on Interim and Final Periodic Spousal Support at Southern University Law Center in 1998.
- Practicing in the Hinterlands for the Family Section of the Baton Rouge Bar Association in 2000.
- Commencing and Defending Child Custody Cases and ethics for the National Business Institute in 2004.
- Recent Developments in Family Law at Southern University Law Center in 2005.
Finally, Ms Fontenot is a member of the Baton Rouge Bar Association, the Family Law Section of BRBA, where she has held the office of Secretary/Treasurer for 2005, the Vice-Chair for 2006, and Chair for 2007. She is also a member of the 18th Judicial District Court Bar Association and a past member of the Louisiana City Attorney’s Association.
Finally, Ms. Fontenot is a member of the Baton Rouge Bar Association, the Family Law Section of BRBA, the Louisiana Public Defender's Association, and the Louisiana City Attorney's Association.
